3A - Entrepreneurship Story

Entrepreneurship Story

Exposure to Entrepreneurship

My first exposure to entrepreneurship started at a young age.  My father started a small business fixing VCRs out of our house.  Obviously, without innovation this was not a sustainable business thru the years.  Technology changes fast and if you adapt and innovate with it you will fall behind and fizzle out.

Later in life, I worked for a small family owned restaurant that my friend’s family operated.

Both experiences taught me a bit about running and operating your own business.  It is much more glamorous from the outside looking in.  There are some very big benefits, but it takes a certain mentality, personality and drive to be successful.

In my current role I run a privately-owned IT consulting company.  Doing this truly filled in some of the gaps that I had on the financial side of running and operating a business.

Why I enrolled in ENT3003

To be honest, I enrolled in this class because it is a core requirement for my program and during orientation, we were walked through the process of choosing this and one other course.  I will say that I truly am excited to continue down this road and feel that this course will be valuable to my education and future goals in business.

I am hoping to gain a deeper understanding of Entrepreneurship; starting and building a business from the ground up.

  1. Hey Alan, that's a really cool story. VHS tapes are extremely nostalgic for me. Unfortunately, as you had mentioned, it wasn't the most sustainable business. But it's cool that you got to grow up around that kind of entrepreneurship. You mentioned that it takes a certain personality to do it. Hopefully you were able to get some skills from growing up around your dad!

  2. Hey Alan!
It is amazing that you were able to comprehend what really goes into a business at such a young age. It allows you to appreciate every element of entrepreneurship and drives you to work hard. One thing that I found really interesting was when you mentioned how fast technology advances and it is true. What are some skills you are hoping to acquire or refine while taking ENT3003?

  3. Hey there Alan, I am in complete agreeance with you about the idea that it takes a certain mentality and drive to be successful as an entrepreneur and business owner. I too got involved in an entrepreneurial experience from a younger age and it has stayed as a guiding point in my life ever since! I hope to see both of our interest and engagement grow as this course goes on!

I think it is absolutely amazing how you have started you run your IT consulting company, that takes a lot of skill and professionalism. 5. That's amazing that you have so much experience in the entrepreneurship world already. I'm impressed that you run an IT company, especially with going to college full time. My mom also started a business so I was exposed to that growing up, and it made me realize how much work you have to put into something as an entrepreneur.
